Mt. Meru is located in the heart of Arusha National Park, approximately 50 miles west of Mt. Kilimanjaro. This massive volcano rises to an elevation of 14,980 feet (4,565 meters). Trekking Mt. Meru is an excellent way to acclimatize for Mt. Kilimanjaro due to its altitude and climbing distances. It also appeals to hikers who prefer fewer crowds and a more challenging climb. Because Mt. Meru is within Arusha National Park, hikers must be accompanied by an armed ranger due to the diverse wildlife on the mountain. On the lower slopes, hikers are likely to encounter elephants, giraffes, and buffalo. As they ascend, the trail follows the north rim of the volcano’s crater along a dramatic ridgeline. Throughout the trek, hikers stay in designated huts along the trail. Reaching the summit at sunrise offers breathtaking views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Mt. Meru Crater.

The best time to climb Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second highest peak and a stunning volcanic formation within Arusha National Park, is during the dry seasons, typically from June to October and from December to February. These periods offer clearer skies and more stable weather conditions, providing optimal visibility and safety for climbers. While the mountain can be climbed year-round, the rainy seasons from March to May and November can bring heavy rainfall and slippery trails, making the ascent more challenging and potentially hazardous. Additionally, climbing during the dry seasons allows for a more enjoyable experience, with better chances to witness breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, including the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. A Beautiful Giant 5895amsl free standing mountain over 6 days lemosho route. âIt is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.â Godliving Bayona, the best kilimanjaro mountain guide famously said. This is what mountain teaches us. We might seem like a puny ant in front of it but we can still dream to reach the top, however, far it might seem. It is this self-belief of reaching the top despite the insurmountable odds that makes mountains so special for me. An adventure is never complete without a partner in crime. I didnât had 1 but 3. Three complete strangers from different parts of India whom I can now count as my dear friends. We not only hiked together but we shared our pains and happiness alike.
