Materuni, home to the Chagga tribe, remains an authentic tribal village just 15 km from Moshi Town and serves as the last stop before entering Kilimanjaro National Park. Your adventure begins in Moshi, where an English-speaking guide will pick you up and drive you to Materuni Village. Upon arrival, registration at the village office marks the start of your journey. The short, scenic drive from Moshi up the lush slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro to Materuni, situated at approximately 1,800 meters above sea level, offers a glimpse into the region's rich agricultural heritage, ideal for producing some of Africa's best coffee. At a local coffee farm, you'll learn about the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of coffee, and even participate in roasting and preparing a fresh cup the traditional Chagga way. After enjoying this delightful coffee break, you’ll embark on a picturesque 45-minute hike through banana and coffee plantations, mini-valleys, ridges, and splashing rivulets towards the Materuni Falls. Throughout the hike, your guide will introduce you to local plants used for food and traditional medicine, enriching your understanding of the Chagga culture.

A Beautiful Giant 5895amsl free standing mountain over 6 days lemosho route. âIt is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.â Godliving Bayona, the best kilimanjaro mountain guide famously said. This is what mountain teaches us. We might seem like a puny ant in front of it but we can still dream to reach the top, however, far it might seem. It is this self-belief of reaching the top despite the insurmountable odds that makes mountains so special for me. An adventure is never complete without a partner in crime. I didnât had 1 but 3. Three complete strangers from different parts of India whom I can now count as my dear friends. We not only hiked together but we shared our pains and happiness alike. Day 1: Moshi To Materuni Village
You will have two options for transport between Moshi town and the village… For those who really wish to have the ‘real’ experience, you can hop on a dala dala (the local minibuses. If you’d prefer to travel more quickly and comfortably you can choose to take a private car. Once you reach the village you will start your coffee tour at a traditional Chaggah ‘shamba’.
Here our guide will explain all aspects of the Chaggah homestead including the other crops that they grow aside from coffee. You will get to see how the coffee is produced- from picking the bean to roasting and then drinking a delicious cup yourself. Following our Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Tour you will then take a short hike (make sure to wear some sports or Mountain boot, shoes as it can be muddy up there), passing through local villages to reach the waterfalls.
You will either have a picnic lunch box or arrive to a full spread of freshly cooked lunch prepared to the one of the local families, Following lunch you will have the opportunity to take a dip in the refreshing (quite cold!) pools beneath the waterfalls.
